Affiliate Link – Action Figures (Published in 1992)
Written by Robert Young, Action Figures* is a 64-page hardcover book dedicated to the story of action figures. Ranging from the pre-history of action figures all of the way to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the book offers a rough overview of the action figure as a toy and even goes into chapters on making and collecting action figures. The chapter on making action figures is a treat, showing the processes behind the toy manufacture as well as pics of molds and an injection machine.
Of Kenner’s Star Wars, the book mostly discusses the size of the toys:
“The reason for making smaller action figures was simple. Kenner wanted to sell lots of accessories to go with the figures. Smaller figures meant smaller, more affordable accessories.”
Please don’t think that I’m trying to say that this is a must-own book about action figures. What it is, though, is one more tool if you’re constructing your own reference library. As another piece of a larger library, Action Figures* is worth grabbing.
