Affiliate Link – Battle Beasts SDCC 2012 Exclusive Minimates 2-Pack

I am not understanding the design decisions behind Diamond Select Toys’ new Battle Beasts series. Vorin (illustrated here) looks pretty good, but the Zik dragonfly in this upcoming Battle Beasts SDCC 2012 Exclusive Minimates 2-Pack* looks terrible. The wings are okay, but everything else about the toy looks like it should have never made it past the napkin stage.

  1. Wow, it’s amazing how seeing a fully painted version of Vorin just makes my interest level plummet. I really was looking forward to these, but both of these figures just look boring.

I don’t think standing next to Zik helps at all. Zik just reminds me that these are minimates, and that is not what Diamond Select needed to do to get my money. Despite owning a few Marvel minimates that I bought for my desk many years ago, I am not a fan of them at all.

  2. Long time reader, first time reply.
I used to love Minimates, and to a degree I still like them. I appreciate the broad variety of Marvel characters they offer and the dedication they have to their fans, but Minimates have changed for the worse. My love for the line diminished when they started adding all these sculpted parts when a simple paint app would do, they started looking less like the deformed block style figure they initially set out to be and more like small action figures with interchangeable parts. I miss the simplicity and fun the line once had, but now they are killing them with unnecessary sculpts. I hate that. And I hate these.
Vorin doesn’t look like a Minimate, and Zik looks like a horrible mess trying to pass for a Minimate.
Just my two cents. Lego now has the Marvel license, I suppose I’ll just stick with them now.

  3. I quite like Vorin still, even with his white lifeless eyes. Zik is indeed quite troubling, though..
