There is something I will never understand, and that’s why someone would sign a license to produce items for a new movie and then not have those items in stores a few weeks before the movie is in theaters. It seems to me like you want your licensed stuff — posters, shirts, toys, games, whathaveyou — out there before the movie is in theaters so that you can take advantage of the studio’s marketing of the film.
Coming out after the film is in theaters means that unless the movie is amazing your sales aren’t going to be as strong as they would have been during the hype time before release.
Anyway, that seems like a hell of a lot of words just for me to point out that the upcoming Prometheus Action Figures* are available for pre-order at Entertainment Earth. But with the toys set for release in September, the movie in theaters now and getting very mixed reviews, I think that what we see here is a perfect example of what I’m talking about.
From Ridley Scott’s sci-fi thriller Prometheus, come these highly detailed and exceptionally articulated deluxe action figures that stand 8 1/2-inches tall and feature ball-jointed necks, shoulders, torsos, wrists, hips, and ankles, as well as insert-molded ball-hinge elbows and knees. Bring home the alien space jockeys with these great figures! This Series 1 set contains 2 individually packaged figures (subject to change): 1x Engineer Chair Suit Figure, 1x Engineer Pressure Suit Figure.

I, for one, am glad toys like these weren’t around BEFORE the movie. Hello, spoilers. Its hard enough to avoid spoilers on the internet, but having them hanging on shelves, too? Yeah, no thanks.
I wonder if this is more a Ridley Scott thing. Alien(s) toys have historically come out way after the film–something that was already a bit of a stretch since the first two films were rated R.
These days, there’s at least enough adult collectors that you’d think they’d at least have them in production by now.
Personally, I couldn’t care less about the figures just give me the spaceship!!
i think these gonna do fine – even i consider buying them and i’m not an avid toyshopper these days. i say also Josh’s argument is well noted and a thing to think about. Neca puts out their Alien and Predator line randomly over the year and there’s no major movie push or media and i bet a bunch of Alien fans will jump on these guys just for completion (even if most say the movie sucks).
This summer is rough with toys so i’m okay with taking a break until september.
Spoilers – I’m sorry, but if I was the one risking hundreds of thousands of dollars on an unproven film then I wouldn’t care about spoilers. If the studio insisted that merchandise be released AFTER the movie then I sure hope that NECA got a great price on the license.
Alien and Predator are established properties with proven sales. Prometheus — a weird not/is/might/no/yes/huh? prequel to Alien — isn’t capitalizing on the Alien brand. That makes it a tougher sell.
The movie’s performance in theaters also isn’t helping the sales of these toys any.
Also, international release (or at least here in Germany of my knowledge) is AUGUST!(FRIKKING DON’T KNOW WHY!!AGH) that makes september as release not that bad.
