I’ve written several times before about Paolo Bacigalupi’s fantastic fiction (battlegrip.com search) and now we’re only one week from the release of his next novel, The Water Knife*. Bacigalupi’s writings of our world as a near-future and post-apocalyptic society collapsing are wonderful masterpieces, and with The Water Knife it sounds like his work is striking close to today’s headlines.
The American Southwest has been decimated by drought. Nevada and Arizona skirmish over dwindling shares of the Colorado River, while California watches, deciding if it should just take the whole river all for itself. Into the fray steps Las Vegas water knife Angel Velasquez. Detective, assassin, and spy, Angel “cuts†water for the Southern Nevada Water Authority and its boss, Catherine Case, ensuring that her lush, luxurious arcology developments can bloom in the desert and that anyone who challenges her is left in the gutted-suburban dust.
My copy is on pre-order and I’m looking forward to sitting down next week and devouring this title. Bacigalupi gets societal collapse and this is sure to be a great story.
