An Earlier Blue Snaggletooth?

By now you all know the story. Kenner, in 1978, made a mistake when they crafted their first Snaggletooth action figure and quickly replaced the toy with a more accurate design, which meant that for decades the “Blue” Snaggletooth was special. Hell, the toy and character is still special, and I still want Sideshow Collectibles to create a 12-inch scale Blue Snaggletooth action figure (Sideshow staff, please make this happen!).

I’ve reviewed two Blue Snaggletooth collectibles from Gentle Giant over the years — Blue Snaggletooth Statue review here, Star Wars Jumbo Vintage Blue Snaggletooth review here — but it wasn’t until this past weekend that I spotted a Blue Snaggletooth that pre-dates the 1978 Kenner action figure. How did I miss this all of these years?

From the second issue of Marvel’s Star Wars comic adaptation (on shelves May, 1977) comes this panel that clearly shows a blue-faced Snaggletooth. Now we’ll ignore the “Jabba” character design — Marvel did the best they could — but even though that Snaggletooth is wearing yellow it’s the blue of the character that now has me wondering if this comic had any impact on Kenner’s decision to create their Blue Snaggletooth action figure.

Fun and weird stuff. And for more fun and weird Star Wars Cantina excitement I suggest Raising the Alien Bar: The Star Wars Cantina because it’s a great read and loaded with lots of pics. Check it out!
