Art on Toys – The Packaging Art of Vintage Dime Store Toys

I’ve only bought a few books from blurb.com over the years. The quality is all well and good, but the site’s rates are off the chart and far pricier than many other print on demand book operations. I wish authors and book creators would use other sites rather than blurb.com, but there are times when this site is the only choice for buying a book.

Unfortunately, it is looking like Jonathan Cobin’s Art on Toys is one of those times when my only chance to buy the book is from blurb.com. $75 for a 158-page 10-inch by 8-inch hardcover? Ouch! Still, the sample pages and the content — a look at dime store toys’ packaging art — has caught my attention. Now I just have to decide if this looks fun enough for me to pull the trigger and order a copy for my library.

Inexpensive dime store toys have always fascinated children of all ages. Was it the toy inside the package or was it the colorful imaginative packaging art that really pulled them in? Take a look at the wonderful pop culture cartoon artwork that appeared on inexpensive dime store toys of the 1950’s and 1960’s. The author has digitally captured over 700 hundred of the miniature masterpieces of art.
