August, 1997 Kiplinger’s Personal Finance on Mattel and Hasbro
Here’s another awesome example of the sort of thing that can be uncovered online. This article from 1997 goes into a quick discussion of why Mattel tried to acquire Hasbro and even touches on the 1987 pains that Mattel went through when they suffered a multi-million dollar deficit.
What I find most interesting about the 1987 mention is that the reason for Mattel’s money woes of the time — Masters of the Universe — is never once mentioned by name. When I was working on Action Figures Not Included I dug into a few references on the collapse of He-Man in the eighties, and this article makes a great companion piece to the section in my book that touches on this same issue.
