Bill Sienkiewicz and Tales from the Edge #15

If you’re not familiar with the art of Bill Sienkiewicz it’s only because you don’t know his name. Trust me, if you visit this site with any regularity then you know of Bill Sienkiewicz’s work. Two specific pieces leap out at me as ones that every single one of you must be completely aware of: The Marvel comics Starriors and Transformers first issues of the eighties. Here, take a look and then tell me you don’t recognize these two paintings.

Sienkiewicz went on to become a highly-respected artist who has produced comic art, fine art, commercial art, and even today is creating remarkable paintings and illustrations. If I had the cash I would be at his official website right now buying original art, including the M&M advertising illustrations that he created. But I realistically do not have the funds to start collecting Sienkiewicz originals, no matter how much I would love to have the Starriors covers hanging in my office.

What I can afford to buy are books and comics with Sienkiewicz artwork, so I do that and have been for several years. Shown above is the cover to Tales from the Edge #15*, a 44-page comic packed with Sienkiewicz artwork. This is just one small and unusual item I’ve got that features the artwork of Bill Sienkiewicz, but if you’ve ever wanted a closer look at his artwork you can’t go wrong with this since it shows off samples from various projects.

Flipping through this makes me realize I’m not clear on where my copy of Friendly Dictators: 36 Of Americas Most Embarrassing Allies/Trading Cards* went to. Hmmmm. Time to poke around in the one closet that houses the majority of the art books in our collection; hopefully the set of cards is there and waiting patiently to be discovered and enjoyed again.
