Dark Tower in Popular Mechanics in 1981
Yesterday’s 1981 review of the Dark Tower boardgame isn’t the only fun info on the game that we can find online. It took a different search approach, but I quickly discovered that the game also appeared in the December 1981 issue of Popular Mechanics where Neil Shapiro wrote of the game:
“For a year, we’ve been saying how great the adventure-style games are on home computers–but if you don’t have a home computer, you may have felt left out. Now, anyone can join in on the fun of computerized, fantasy role playing with this new board game.”
Okay, let’s stop and think about that time when computers were not as common as they are today. In 1981, I didn’t have a single device that could be considered a computer. Now, as I type this on a laptop, I also have an iPhone and an iPad sitting right beside me. That’s a hell of a lot of computing power all within a foot of me. Wouldn’t 1981 me be amazed at today’s technology?
