DC Universe Subscription, Already Failed?
Mattel’s offering 2012 DC Universe Club Infinite Earths, a subscription service that appears to have already failed. A meter on their site implies that they haven’t even hit 25% of their subscriber goal, and that implies that unless a hell of a lot of fans commit in the next few days this enterprise is dead.
Now I think that meter is questionable, if only because it has been sitting at the same place for days now. Either Mattel isn’t automating that meter or they’re just not bothering to update it. Why? No idea, but posts at Poe’s site and at It’s All True dive into the issue; the It’s All True post also has over 200 comments so you should read through those if you have any interest in subscribing.
I hope that fans of DC Universe Classics get the 2012 subscription, but yet again I question Mattel’s choices and operations when it comes to subscriptions. They’re asking fans to commit to spending over $200 in 2012 — plus shipping and handling, which is roughly another $10/figure — without really giving any concrete information on action figures planned for the year. It’s basically my same complaint with the Masters of the Universe subscription model (I made my own suggestions back in 2009) but combined with a goal and meter that just has hardcore fans sweating.
The subscription closes on Friday at 2 pm Pacific time, so if you’re a DC Universe Classics fan and want in then go to this page at Matty Collector and subscribe before it’s too late. It looks as if every single subscription really does matter.
Mattel, please update that meter today so that fans know just what percentage of the goal has really been met.
I think Mattel is just asking a bit too much from the fans. Honestly, though, I think about 70% of the complaints against Mattycollector anymore could be rectified by the addition of a pile of loot system like BBTS. I’d buy a helluva lot more figures and probably even subs if I knew I’d be getting a deal on shipping by waiting a month or two.
Regardless, I really hope the Club goes well for everyone. I don’t collect DCUC much anymore because of the price, but I don’t see why a lot of DCUC hardcore fans don’t just buy the subs and sell off the figures they don’t want. Like Noisy said, SOMEONE is going to want that Black Lantern Swamp Thing.
Good luck, Phil!
As of yesterday it’s at 28%. Not a good sign.
