“Defend the Skies of Eternia”

Can you believe that Mattel’s Masters of the Universe Classics series has been running long enough that this ad — from a 2009 issue of Lee’s Toy Review — is five years old? Incredible. I thought for sure Mattel would have killed the line before now, but it seems as if each summer the subscriptions open and enough fans jump on to keep the series moving forward.

A great ad for Stratos, but it has been so long since I’ve picked up a physical toy magazine that I don’t even know if Mattel is still buying advertising space or not. Anyone have an idea of just which toy magazines are even in business these days?

  1. I think these print ads died when ToyFare Magazine died back in 2011 right around this time of year. Last issue was March 2011 with Green Lantern on the cover.

    1. Someone had taken to making mock-up ads for future releases and was publishing them on Flickr. I haven’t seen any for a while so I’m not sure if he’s still doing them or not.

  2. Does Lee’s Toy Review still exist? Last time I checked, they were still offering subscriptions online but I hadn’t seen the magazine in shops for quite some time.

  3. Again, like with DCUC, I’m just sort of shocked that it’s already been FIVE years now. It seems like just yesterday we were getting Stratos, Mer-Man, Man-At-Arms, Hordak, etc. How far the line has come! Its just kind of staggering. You could have had a baby when Stratos was being released and today he’d be FIVE. Or rather you could have been starting your undergraduate and today have a degree!

  4. @PrfktTear – The original line ran what, six years? (81 to 87) Will MOTUC last longer than the first eighties Masters of the Universe toy series did?
