Diamond Select Toys Creating 1966 Batman Collectibles
The press release is up for everyone who wants the details, but the basics boil down to: Diamond Select Toys has a license for the 1966 Batman television series and will be joining several other companies in flooding the market with retro Batman stuff. Busts, banks, statues, bottle openers . . . yeah, the new wave of television series stuff has gone from a neat bit of collectibles news to overkill before it even really starts hitting stores.
I’m now left wondering which items will sell and which will find their way to clearance sales by next spring.
Character likenesses attached to the DST line include Adam West as Batman, Burt Ward as Robin, Julie Newmar as Catwoman, Frank Gorshin as The Riddler, Burgess Meredith as The Penguin, Cesar Romero as The Joker, and several other famous villains on the television show. DST will also draw on the show’s many distinctive props and sets for new products in the line.

I’ve been waiting all of my life for toys and collectibles from the 1966 Batman series, but they really are releasing too much at once. It would have made more sense to roll out these things slowly. With so many different Batman 1966 products to choose from, some of it is bound to sit on the shelves and not sell, and that could sour retailers from ordering more ’66 stuff in the future. It’s bad business on the part of Warner Brothers/DC Comics.
@Joshua Raymond – Agreed about this being a Warner Brothers/DC issue. I cannot understand why they approved so many things for release all at once. I would think a trickle release schedule would capture more collectors for the long haul.
But I could be wrong. Look at all of the Angry Birds stuff out there.
