“Dungeons & Dragons creator found no fun in new venture”
Here’s one from the Milwaukee Journal newspaper on October 1 of 1989 that deserves a look. After his days at TSR, Gary Gygax worked with others to create New Infinities (see Wikipedia), a company I best remember for their Cyborg Commandos roleplaying game. Cyborg Commandos is one of those terrible games of the eighties — such cheesy bad fun — that’s easy to forget ever existed, but it totally existed and as this review at rpg.net says in closing:
“The final assessment must be that whilst Cyborg Commando isn’t the worst game written, it is outstandingly poor. This is a product that should be held up to designers as a lesson in how not to write a game.”
With that statement, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the 1989 newspaper article is all about the failures of New Infinities. The article discusses how investors “filed an involuntary petition to liquidate New Infinities Productions in US Bankruptcy Court.” Additionally, the article states that “nobody had any idea what sort of salary Gygax was taking from New Infinities.” The entire situation sounds absolutely terrible for everyone involved.
