Edge of Tomorrow Hits $94 Million in the US

Over the last weekend, Gina and I went with Kali to see Edge of Tomorrow, the Tom Cruise sci-fi film that really should be doing much better in theaters than it is. According to this animenewsnetwork.com post the film has only hit $94 million in the United States . . . that’s a disgusting show of why movies are something I don’t watch as often as I once did.

Edge of Tomorrow is smart, well-crafted, and should be doing far better in theaters than it is. The time-distorting twist and way in which the story tells, retells, and tells again the same sequences is done in a way that you don’t get bored watching as Tom Cruise’s character discovers the best way through each obstacle. Add to that the visual excitement, bits of well-placed humor, and sheer violence of the battle scenes and . . . well, I’m stuck trying to figure out what is wrong with today’s society when a movie of this quality is quietly failing at the box office.

America, get out there and see this!

  1. Totally agree with you. I saw this on opening weekend and loved it! People need to get out and watch it!

  2. seconded! This movie and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes both really surprised me at how overall good they were. And that may be the problem – most movies that come out are so incredibly mediocre that when something truly great shows up people don’t know what to do with it.

  3. I really liked this movie. However, if I had not already heard it was good and worth seeing, then I would have waited for video. The trailer did not make it look interesting to me, it just looked ridiculous and too busy, and didn’t display any of the humor that is actually in the film. Frankly it just looked like it was a combination of ‘Oblivion’ and ‘Source Code’ to me.
I also was tired of seeing Tom Cruise as an action hero. Of course, other than the one line of “I’m not a soldier” you can’t really tell from the trailer that he is a bit of a coward and very reluctant to be there.

I would say it isn’t doing well because of action movie fatigue, but Transformers (which looks absolutely terrible to me) is breaking all kinds of records; so what do I know?

  4. Great movie, and a surprising amount of humor. I convinced a few people to go see it. Everyone who was uncertain about it said they did not know what to expect from the movie at all from the trailers.

All You Need Is Kill is a cooler title.

Transformers you know what you are in for except for the burnt meat statue. That would have given me nightmares as a kid.

  5. I enjoyed it too. After thoroughly enjoying Oblivion I didn’t think Cruise could follow up with another great Sci Fi movie, I was wrong.

  6. Saw it, loved it too. Was surprised when I found out it was doing so poorly. Skipped Transformers and it’s doing gangbusters! 😛
