Elder Sign: Omens, Yet One More Game Making Me Want an iPad

Apple’s iPad (Amazon.com search*) is one of those devices I wanted to like but, after toying with one for an evening, just couldn’t love. I sat at the couch trying to use the machine to write, but I never could figure out a way to hold it comfortably and type at the same time . . . so I just gave up in disgust.

Well, more and more hobby games keep getting translated to the iPad, and now there’s an upgrade for Elder Sign: Omens planned. And it has me looking at iPads again and trying to decide whether or not I want to buy one as a gaming device.

What is Elder Sign: Omens? Well, to answer that we have to follow the trail, which starts with the Arkham Horror series (Amazon.com search*) of Cthulhu board games. Arkham Horror is massive and can be a lot of fun to play, but it’s so large that setup alone is a commitment in time. What I love most about the game is the atmosphere and story . . . what I hate most is that it is a long game. Basically, if I don’t start playing by noon then I won’t play the game that day.

Last year, Elder Sign* — described as an Arkham Horror dice game — was published. The same sense of story, but packed into a faster playing (and less expensive) game. I think there’s fun to be had with the game, but I’m having a tough time getting the rules and I need to play more times before I know exactly what’s up with the mechanics. And that’s where Elder Sign: Omens enters the picture. (Official website.) A digital translation of the dice game to the iPad, what I’ve seen makes me think that the game would be a lot of fun and it would even make me better understand the dice game. And all of that interests me . . . but to play I would have to buy an iPad.

And chatting with Andrew at work I am getting the impression that there are enough other games for the iPad that Gina and I would enjoy having one in the house. Damn.

  1. And I broke down and bought an iPad today. Installing Elder Sign: Omens now. Then I’ll spend an hour or so playing before I collapse for the night.
