Evolo Skyscrapers
This is a bit out there, but the entire Evolo Skyscrapers competition is so amazing that I’ve gotta share. Each year architects submit their skyscraper designs, and as you explore the competition page you’ll learn pretty fast that these are some imaginative and incredible designs.
The above design, “Space High-Rise” by Kwonwoong Lim, Skyscrapers of the Future, a 2010 issue of the Evolo magazine. The idea behind the design is that it is an orbital city that extends to the Earth’s surface, not quite touching the ground. That makes this almost a space elevator (see Wikipedia entry), but not quite since the skyscraper design isn’t anchored to the ground.
I’ve no idea how realistic this is, but the design is wild and would fit perfectly well with a city designed following the 7 Cyberpunk City Tropes for Writers and Gamemasters article that I wrote a few weeks ago.
