G.I. Joe on Kindle Worlds
I was instantly excited by the announcement of Kindle Worlds* last year, sitting down and writing “Five ’80s Toy Properties I Want to See on Kindle Worlds” as soon as word was out that Amazon was publishing licensed “fan fiction” for a small number of properties.
I never once guessed, though, that Hasbro and Amazon would take things a step beyond expectations and announce G.I. Joe as a member of the Kindle Worlds* program. That’s incredible!!!
G.I. JOE brand, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2014, since the first G.I. JOE action figure was released in 1964. With the launch of the G.I. JOE World, writers will be able to publish their own original fiction starring iconic G.I. JOE characters like DUKE, SNAKE EYES, and COBRA COMMANDER.
I can see two ways of looking at this:
- Hasbro is serious about engaging with fans and open to fan interpretations of the G.I. Joe series.
- Hasbro has effectively dropped G.I. Joe from their portfolio of “active” properties and will slowly remove the line from shelves.
Let’s all hope it’s the first option. I know for sure that if I were still at home working as a writer and publisher I would be all over taking a stab at some G.I. Joe fiction for the program. It’s a great idea and I’d be lying if I didn’t say I wish I had time to try my hand at a short story for the Kindle Worlds* site.
So who is going to give this a try?
