“Games — They’ve Been Holiday Tradition for Over 100 Years”
I posted a newspaper article about Parker Brothers a few days ago (posted here) after spending time reading The Game Makers* for a second time. As I suspected, a different search string in the Google newspaper archives was all that was needed to uncover more about the company, including this 1978 article on games and Christmas.
“Games and Christmas just seem to go together. Adults and children alike enjoy sitting down to an hour of fun and laughter during the holidays — win or lose.”
Now I’ve no evidence to support this suspicion, but after reading through the article I think we’re seeing something Parker Brothers sent out over a newswire in the hopes that newspapers would carry the story. Everything in the story screams “Parker Brothers press!” from the insistence that “game-playing really passed ‘Go’ in 1883” to the titles showcased. What about Milton Bradley, world, and the games the company published in the decades before George Parker’s first game?
