The upcoming How to Build Better Dioramas modeling book is now available for pre-orders from the publisher, Sci-Fi Fantasy Modeller, at a reduced price. Pre-order by January 31st and the book is yours for about $20 US; after that date the price reverts to the MSRP of roughly $25.

“Popular Sci.fi & Fantasy Modeller teamster Barry Ford’s How to Build Better Dioramas is packed with invaluable information to make your hobby even more exact and exciting, and features page after page of step-by-step photography you’ll want to refer to time and again.”

“Written with Barry’s characteristic wit and attention to detail, and covering a wide range of subjects in depth, from painting and weathering to customising and super-detailing in a variety of scales, How To Build Better Dioramas is the must-have title every serious sci-fi and fantasy modeller will want to own.”

I suspect that this book will be as useful for toy customizers as it will be for model kit fanatics. After all, some of the cooler toy photos we’ve seen online have been the shots set in cool dioramas. Obviously I have no clue as to whether or not this is a quality book — or if the tips inside are worth the price — but this is exactly the type of book I enjoy reading.

  1. Many thanks for publicising the book. I’m hoping that you will find the book a fun read and encourage folk to have a go at diorama building, along with a few tips when it comes to building and painting figures.
Please rest assured that the only copies of the book that suck are from the limted edition strawberry flavoured publication run. 🙂

Barry, do you have any links to online photos of some of your dioramas? It would be fun to get a look at some of your work while we wait for the book to be released.

  3. I don’t like the way Bruce Wayine is flexing his left wrist in the Photobucket album you posted but aside from that I think you do a good job and the books is probably worth getting to customizers.
