IDW’s Transformers: Legacy Coming 2014
IDW has released dozens of Transformers books over the years (Amazon.com search*) but their best book yet isn’t due until May. Transformers: Legacy is a collection of packaging artwork and the product description makes it sound like — as Gina said when I told her about the book — IDW made this “just for me.” I am all over this and will pre-order the first chance I get!
Remember the thrill of tearing open a gift on Christmas morning, discovering a brand-new Transformer in a shiny new box? While the toys were amazing in their own right, what made the packages stand head-and-shoulders above the myriad competing action figures on shelves was the stunning box art. Transformers: Legacy collects hundreds of beautifully airbrushed paintings from the iconic first decade of The Transformers. Hasbro, Takara, and private collectors opened their archives, yielding an unparalled level of quality. Essays and interviews from the original illustrators give unprecedented insight into the process behind the art. This book is chock-full of extras, including never-before-seen artwork from toys that never were, original design sketches, catalog artwork, and more.
If you cannot wait until May to see this classic Transformers artwork there’s always the Botch Transformers Art Archive. I could spend hours clicking through all of the artwork on that site. I have spent hours on that site . . . but the book will be better.
I’ve been waiting for this book a long time. Those paintings still make my imagination reel.
@Kevin – I’m tempted to buy a second copy so that I have one for the future. I am certain the first copy will be destroyed by drool.
