Imperial Troop Transport Prototype in Plastic Galaxy

Part of the trouble with the Internet is that we sometimes forget that even things that look well-researched and accurate can turn out to be wrong. For example, last month I posted about a YouTube video that showed us what was described as a Kenner design for a toy to be released after the Power of the Force line. I believed the video . . . until I again watched Plastic Galaxy*.

At roughly 36 minutes and 30 seconds into the Plastic Galaxy* documentary former Kenner preliminary designer Tom Troy shows us a sketch and Polaroid photo of the initial Imperial Troop Transport design. It turns out the toy shown in the video I linked to last month was the prototype for what would eventually become the design Kenner released.

Cooler still? Tom Troy tells u Lucasfilm rejected the initial design and artist Joe Johnston created a new design: The toy we all know! Awesome bit of history and sorry about that earlier and misleading post.

  1. Love the troop transport and these shots of the artwork are great! While I like the open-shovel look of the prototype, I think the sharp-nosed design would have made for a really wonderful toy.
