As I was recently exploring 1980s issues of White Dwarf magazine*, this advertisement for Car Wars from 1985 landed in front of me. So very much awesome potential in these three pocket box games! I think there may have been more gaming value for the dollar in the original game alone than we see in a chunk of the new boardgames that reach tables today.
Car Wars was awesome! It actually had some crazy driving physics detail that you didn’t even notice as a kid and others you did! The value you talk about was great. Just buy a pad of graph paper and layout your maps. I bought a lot of the extra stuff and quarterly updates and there was always value. Nothing like buying 50 DND books to get all the details.
