“‘Jedi’ Press Kit Yields Few Clues”
With the movie over three decades old it is easy to forget that Return of the Jedi was once an unknown story. Empire left us with Han Solo frozen, and it wasn’t until 1983 that we were told what came next in the story. And as we saw in a newspaper story that I posted last year, those who were given the chance to learn the Jedi tale before the film’s release were keeping the secret quiet.
It turns out that even Lucasfilm’s promotion for Return of the Jedi was keeping the story a closed secret. This 1983 newspaper article, written by Deborah Caulfield, gives us a rough overview of the plot, but details are missing. These days most films aren’t surprises at all, so getting a peek at this article should drive home just how much things have changed in film promotion since Jedi was first released.
