Joe Abercrombie’s “Best Served Cold”
I’m unfamiliar with the work of Joe Abercrombie, but now that the latest e-mail from Subterranean Press has directed me to his upcoming novel, Best Served Cold, and caught my eye — first with the cover and then the description — it’s time for me to track down some of Abercrombie’s older work.
The Blade Itself*, Abercrombie’s debut novel, seems to be the logical starting place for me. And, if I like it, then I’ll complete the series and might even have time to order Best Served Cold before it is released later this year. With any luck it will be as good as Scourge of the Betrayer (first mentioned here). I read Scourge of the Betrayer on the Hong Kong trip and am happy to report that it was suitably dark and entertaining fantasy fiction.
War may be hell, but for Monza Murcatto, the Snake of Talins, the most feared and famous mercenary in Duke Orso’s employ, it’s a damn good way of making money too. Her victories have made her popular —a shade too popular for her employer’s taste. Betrayed, thrown down a mountain and left for dead, Murcatto’s reward is a broken body and a burning hunger for vengeance. Whatever the cost, seven men must die.

Thanks so much for the kind remarks. It’s funny–I’d be thrilled if folks were to compare me favorably to Joe Abercrombie, and you’ve gone and done the reverse here! 🙂
Any chance I can talk you into posting a brief review on Amazon and/or Goodreads? I need this kind of press!
@Jeff Salyards – Several people on Twitter encouraged me to try Abercrombie’s earlier works. I’m on it!
And yes, I do plan to post a review of your novel. I just need to survive the next few weeks as we get Ogre out of the office and off to print. The Kickstarter project went amazingly well . . . and generated serious pressure to wrap everything up and get the game out.
No worries. I look forward to reading your review whenever it pops up. Good luck on your stuff!
