Kenner’s Mega Force at KayBee Toys in 1989

That Decepticon Pretender Monsters advertisement we saw a few days ago also brought with it the below block for Kenner’s short-lived Mega Force toyline (see figurerealm.com). Looking at these small vehicles and playsets makes me think of the Galoob Army Gear toys (battlegrip.com search) and I am again left asking: Why were the toymakers producing so many small-scaled vehicles and figures in the eighties? Inflation? Skyrocketing production costs? Changing tastes? Does anyone have info on what led to the smaller-sized toys of the eighties?
