Kickstarter – Appendix N Adventure Toolkits

Last month I wrote about tabletop roleplaying games and how, in my opinion, the books being published today are simply too long. Many disagreed with me, but I stand behind my belief that the books of today are so long and overwhelming that the sheer size of the books alone scares off potential new roleplaying gamers. People who would enjoy the act of sitting down with friends and exploring a dungeon or attacking a space station just can’t get to that point because the books are walls of text longer than some textbooks.

And it’s not just the modern-style games that are guilty of being too long. Goodman Games’ Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG (official website, Amazon.com search*) is billed as a retro-style fantasy roleplaying game, but at almost 500-pages long the book is so long that the only people it will appeal to are existing gamers.

But even if I may disagree with the size of the game, I can appreciate what it is trying to do. And now I see that a line of adventures for the game is looking to be a fantastic deal for anyone who wants old school-style roleplaying game adventures. The Appendix N Adventure Toolkits Kickstarter project, already successfully past its funding goal and with three weeks still to go, promises (at the moment) four printed adventures for just $20. That’s a ridiculously good deal and well worth taking advantage of it you have any interest at all in eighties-styled Dungeons & Dragons gaming.
