“Kiddy craze centers on robot toys”

I posted this 1984 Associated Press newspaper article last summer (posted here), but when I ran across it in a different newspaper — December 9, 1984 issue of the Eugene Register-Guard — it felt fitting to take a second look at the piece which discusses the popularity of GoBots and Transformers that Christmas.

” . . . customers racing to purchase Transformers at a Fairfax, Va., department store last Sunday trampled a woman, who suffered a sprained ankle.”

That’s insane, and a behavior we don’t see often these days. It does make me think of the “there’s no running at Comic-Con” announcements at SDCC each year, but even then I don’t think people were running to buy Transformers toys. Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe every single one of those “there’s no running at Comic-Con” announcements is because someone found a case of 1984 Transformers toys.
