“Kit Bashing Spaceships” from Fantasy Modeling Magazine
Internet searches can be strange. While searching for information on Star Wars Mini-Rigs — both vintage and modern — I came across an out-of-stock magazine at Noble Knight Games. It seems that issue six of the early eighties magazine titled Fantasy Modeling had some sort of article on the Mini-Rigs.
That immediately set me off on a search for “Fantasy Modeling Magazine” which soon led to finding five of the six issues scanned and translated to PDF at Roebeast’s Magical House of Sunshine. The first five issues, though, and not that sixth issue with the Mini-Rigs. Still, being they were modeling magazines from the early eighties I decided to give them a quick scan and was right away rewarded with an article on kit bashing spaceships.
Basic Advice
You can find the entire first issue of Fantasy Modeling in PDF at the Roebeast blog. To make life easier for all of you I’ve also included the five page article, below, which offers basic advice on kit bashing spaceship models. There’s a little too much discussion about spaceships and realism in the article, but the photos are entertaining — as are the ads! — and just maybe some of you will find inspiration in the article and sit down to kitbash your own spaceship toys.
Anyway, enjoy the article and don’t miss the full issue or the other issues in the series. See the “fantasy modeling” tag at Roebeast for the magazine scans.
(Question: Is it “kit bash” or “kitbash?” I find both uses online and cannot figure out which is preferred.
The first time I saw Star Wars, Doctor Who, and Star Trek TMP, I wanted more than anything to grow up and be a model-maker for sci-fi films. Part of me will always be sad that computer programmers have taken over so much of the process.
This article really brought a lot of that feeling back.
Who knows? That early-seated passion for this stuff is probably part of why I still collect toys.
@FigureFan Zero – CG effects have sucked some of the soul out of movies! I remember I used to watch a series on special effects on TV in the early eighties and loved all of the props and tricks they showed. I want to say it was on Nickelodeon Saturday mornings but I cannot remember the name of the show.
