Masters of the Universe Classics Fighting Foe Men and Model Kits
I already mentioned how I love the look of the (might-be-released) Masters of the Universe Classics Fighting Foe Men (mentioned here) and I find it especially cool that Mattel went back to Larry Elmore artwork from the early eighties for design inspiration. For those who don’t know, these action figures are inspired by artwork that was used on Monogram Masters of the Universe model kits.
Digging around the web I managed to find two of the model kit covers over at the he-man.org forums. My “search fu” must be terrible, though, because I didn’t find product information for the model kits at the he-man.org website. I thought these would be under “toys” . . . but no such luck. And I don’t see any obvious spots for them on the site.
The two paintings I spotted are of the Roton (see he-man.org) and Talon Fighter (see he-man.org). And now that we know the Fighting Foe Men are in the works I wish that Mattel had created the Talon Fighter as a toy for the Masters of the Universe Classics series instead of the Wind Raider (available at Amazon.com*). Well, maybe my prediction about third party Masters of the Universe toys will come true (posted here) and someone will bring us vehicle for these toys.
The last bit of model fun I want to be sure everyone sees is Emiliano Santalucia’s character design for the Roton pilot. Created in 2010 and up on his blog, the Roton pilot illustration is absolutely gorgeous and while not an exact match to the planned toy it’s close enough that I’m certainly happy. (And trust me, you also want to check Santalucia’s other MOTUC character designs. There’s a lot of great artwork on his site.)
And that covers what I’ve been able to uncover about the old Masters of the Universe model kits from Monogram. I’m betting that hiding somewhere on the web is a ton of awesome information about these kits . . . but so far I’ve been unable to find it. Maybe you’ll have better luck than I did.
