“Mattel stops sale” in 1979
Earlier this year I shared a 1979 newspaper article about Mattel’s recall of Battlestar Galactica toys. The story describes a “Missile Mail-In” promotion to address the problem, and today I’m pointing you to this 1979 piece in which the Mattel was “considering” the mail-in recall.
What I find interesting is that in this article it is mentioned that a 3-year old died while the other article says a 4-year old died. This is going to require some more research.
Bit by bit we can reconstruct the past of the toy industry through these newspapers. I can’t be the only one who enjoys finding these old articles, right?

Remind’s me of Dennis Leary’s “Merry F %$in’ Christmas” special where he encourages children to use toys that had been banned for being incredibly dangerous.
It’s nice to read the reason behind why all the toys I grew up with had those “no small, moving parts” warnings on them. Apparently someone would eat the missiles!
