Mattel’s “Masters of the Universe” Handheld LCD Game Reviewed in Electronic Games Magazine
If you flip through the December, 1983 issue of Electronic Games Magazine (hosted at archive.org) then you’ll encounter this three-page review of Mattel’s LCD handheld Masters of the Universe video game. Reviewer Joyce Worley devotes way more energy and attention to the game than I was expecting when I accidentally stumbled across the review, and her review almost makes me want to give the game a try.
I won’t, though, because I’m pretty confident that whatever the game would cost to buy would be far, far too much for the gameplay. Still, it’s an enjoyable look at the past and it led me to the handheldmuseum.com page for the game so I am completely happy to have spent a little time with the review.
(Now that handheld Dungeons & Dragons game? That’s something I could be tempted by . . . even though the review and handheldmuseum.com both say this is basically the same game. Yeah, I’m weird. Sorry.)

I love that the author spent more words on reviewing this simple game than many reviewers spend today reviewing modern, more complex games. Seriously, I think this reviewer did a good job of really looking at the elements of gameplay in one of these older, simple titles.
