Mike Mignola and The Chronicles of Corum
Best known for his Hellboy comic series*, artist and writer Mike Mignola spent many years working for various publishers before Hellboy hit shelves, and during that time Mignola’s style slowly developed and became its own very special thing. The Mignola bibliography at Wikipedia is a fantastic starting point when you want to see his earlier work, and best of all some of those early comics are still fairly easy to find and not too expensive to buy.
Here we get a peek at the first issue of the 1986 Chronicles of Corum: Knight of the Swords (Amazon.com search*), an adaptation of Michael Moorcock fiction. What I love most about this cover (and the series) is that Mignola’s really starting to be more Mignola here, with those skulls on the cover a great preview of what we could expect once Mignola started seriously getting into his Hellboy comic series* in the mid-nineties.
Someone needs to publish a book of Mignola’s non-Hellboy covers and artwork. I’d snatch that up instantly!
