“My father and Darth Vader fell into the crater and my father was instantly killed.”

Yesterday I posted scans of a 1981 article that discussed how Darth Vader suffered injuries when he fell into a volcanic crater. In that post I mentioned how this was info I had way back when I was a kid, and how I always wondered where that knowledge even originated.

Today I want to point you at Starlog #40 from November, 1980. In the magazine is an interview with Mark Hamill where he states:

“I remember very early on asking who my parents were and being told that my father and Obi Wan met Darth Vader on the edge of a volcano and they had a duel. My father and Darth Vader fell into the crater and my father was instantly killed. Vader crawled out horribly scarred, and at that point the Emperor landed and Obi Wan ran into the forest, never to be seen again.”

Amazing how much of that aligns nicely with the sequence in Revenge of the Sith*. The details are off, but from a big picture point of view we had the story before Return of the Jedi was released in 1983.

Keep digging back and you can uncover and even earlier mention of Vader falling into a volcano . . .

  1. There’s a lot of that in the old Marvel comics, where things don’t seem to line up with what the prequels revealed. Or maybe they do, from a certain point of view…

Even though I enjoyed a lot of the Dark Horse ones, I am kinda looking forward to the new Marvel book.
