So while I was on my trip I picked up the second issue of illo Magazine, a quarterly art magazine by publisher Daniel Zimmer. Priced at $15, this 96-page magazine is printed on heavy stock, perfect-bound, and packed with fantastic content that kept me entertained on a few flights last week. And you can even see thumbnails of every page in the magazine online, in case you’re wondering about the general look of the magazine.

Artists in this issue are:

  • Michael Cho, who has an absolutely amazing style that blends hard lines with simple, minimalistic color style. A very graphic look.

  • James Gurney, creator of the popular Dinotopia series of books. My favorite part about this article has to be Gurney’s discussion of his (very) early years as an artist.

  • Nancy Stahl, a commercial illustrator who has created some iconic images and really loves her computer. I love the photographic-sharpness of Stahl’s work.

  • Zina Saunders, daughter of Mars Attacks artist Norman Saunders and an artist with a fantastic sense of composition.

Overall, an excellent, enjoyable magazine and one I’ll search for again. Hit the illo Magazine website for information on the magazine. Hopefully this will succeed, because we could use more great magazines and publisher Daniel Zimmer appears to have a great eye and an sense of artistic taste that fits smoothly with my own love of graphic, hard-edged imagery.
