Reading – Nuthin’ But Mech

Collecting artwork from the blog of the same name, the 128-page Nuthin’ But Mech* art book presents page after page of glorious mech designs by a wide variety of talented artists. I accidentally happened across this book last week and can say that it was one of those very happy accidents that led to a beautiful new art book joining my collection.

Highly Recommended!

I’m not even gonna pretend to take a close, objective look at the Nuthin’ But Mech* art book and instead leap right in and simply state:

If you’re a fan of mecha artwork then you need this book.

I don’t think it gets any easier than that, and to help demonstrate why this book is so much fun I shot eight photos and posted them to this Flickr set so that you can get an idea of what’s inside the book. Seriously, this is page after page of well-crafted mecha artwork that ranges from full-spread paintings to a number of sketches and mech designs spread across multiple pages. Divided by artist, the one thing in common with all of the artwork in the book is that it’s masterfully done; if I were working on a mecha game today I’d be happy to have any of these artists working on the project.

Only Nine Months?

In the introduction the book’s compiler, and creator of the Nuthin’ But Mech blog, tells us that this book is the result of nine months of work. I’m impressed, because sorting through images and then herding all of the artists and designers toward a common goal couldn’t have been an easy task. But Lorin Wood, the guy behind the project, pulled off something fantastic and gave us an art book that really should be on every mecha fan’s shelf.

Closing Thoughts

Nuthin’ But Mech* is cleanly designed, packed with cool artwork, and the actual printing and binding of the book itself is as professional as the artwork printed inside. You really should take a look at the Flickr set that I posted, and if those shots and the official blog doesn’t convince you that you need this book then you’re just not a lover of giant mecha designs.
