Reading – Robo Force and the Giant Robot
Published in 1985, Robo Force and the Giant Robot* is a choose your own adventure-like book that is, to be honest, very basic. But since it was targeted at younger kids — not to mention how great the art looks — I can forgive the simple story/adventure and just sit back enjoy the book as a bit of fun from the past.
Making the “Wrong” Choice Extends the Adventure
Something I figured out pretty fast while reading Robo Force and the Giant Robot* was that there really is no “wrong” choice. If you choose the wrong option then something happens and then you are directed to the correct page. So I eventually started choosing the wrong answer just to get more story.
Stop the Giant Robot!
So what we have here is an adventure where an evil robot is enlarged and our heroes — guided by you! — must stop the rampaging robot. There are a few puzzles that aren’t all that tough — but I bet if I had read this as a kid I would have found these challenging — but most of the adventure is just going from point to point. Still, the art truly is remarkable so I shot some pics and posted a Flickr set that you should peek at.
32-Fun Pages
A short book, lots of great art, and the joy of making choices and playing a simple game makes me happy that I added Robo Force and the Giant Robot* to my collection of books. There were other books published so now it’s time I keep an eye open; I want more of these for my collection.
