Reading – The Latest Issue of Juxtapoz

Juxtapoz Art & Culture Magazine (website, Twitter), went a little overboard with their latest issue, bringing in the artist Pushead (check the fansite, www.pusfan.com, for info on the artist) as “guest currator” for the Halloween-themed issue.

This is a great issue, with artwork by Martin Emond, Zdzislaw Beksinski, Wes Benscoter (official website), Rockin’ Jelly Bean (weird, weird girlie art), Mike Sutfin (remember his MadBattleMan toy?), Kris Verwimp, and more. It’s a catalog of some twisted, dark, awesome artwork.

In addition to the artist works (and interviews), there’s also the usual features, including reviews of two books, both of which sound interesting.

  • Flare, The Art of Junko Mizuno – Check the blog for a look at the style of work. Not exactly my sort of thing, but I can respect the talent and thought that goes into the work.
  • Travis Louie’s Curiosities – I saw this book a few weeks ago and was tempted by it. Take a look at the artist’s blog for samples of the art and what’s in the book. (Available at Amazon.com.)

Overall, this is one of the best issues of Juxtapoz that I’ve seen. It’s cool that the editors chose to give Pushead a chance to run the show for an issue and we’re very lucky that we were given such a great little package.

Magazines may be suffering, but Juxtapoz looks like they’re not gonna go down without a fight.

I really need to subscribe to this magazine and stop hoping I manage to catch issues in stores.
