Hasbro’s G.I. Joe (find at Amazon.com*) was once a powerhouse. Popular animated series. Popular comic. Hugely popular action figure series. G.I. Joe was a beast back in the eighties, but as time went on, the series dropped in popularity. Fortunately for us, before G.I. Joe faded away, the line saw the release of a non-sport trading card set by Impel that was packed with great Marvel artwork
I mentioned these trading cards way back in 2010, and I must now admit that I still haven’t opened that box of trading cards. I should grab a binder and card sheets and release those cards from prison.
I have a set I built from a box years ago. It has great original art plus comic covers and such.
I had a full set, too. I agree about the art. It was a nicely varied set featuring the bread & butter legacy characters and vehicles and the at-the-time current updates like Desert Scorpion, Crimson Guard Immortal, Tracker, the Brawler, Interrogator, and I forget the guy’s name but he had one of those gliders that would actually glide through the air. There was also a nice little subset of characters that had died in the comics like Crazylegs and Crystall Ball, and comic cover cards with synopses of standout issues.
Early 90s was great for non-sport cards in general. The first Marvel Universe cards were out about the same time. I was a little old for toys, but my buddy’s dad had a card shop and I spent a lot of time there and built a lot of non sport card decks or occasionally buy a full set cheaply. I remember discovering some older 80s stuff there like the 3-D Jaws set and also DInosaurs Attack! which was phenomenal to me at the time.
