Review – Captain America 2002 Cadillac Cien Concept

Line: Marvel * Manufacturer: Maisto * Year: 2011 * Ages: 3+

Maisto (website, Twitter) makes lots of die-cast toy cars, and recently I ran across this Captain America 2002 Cadillac Cien Concept and just loved the shape and colors so much that the car had to come home with me. And for $2 this wasn’t a bad deal at all; more expensive than a standard Hot Wheels car but a lot less than the specially-branded cars we’ve seen over the past few weeks.

Sleek and Awesome

I know that the designers of the real Cadillac Cien Concept (Wikipedia) deserve the credit for the car’s great design, but Maisto earns some respect from me for translating the car down so perfectly to this toy. Every line is smooth and gorgeous, and playing with the car — which rolls smoothly — makes me wish I could buy a real Cien Concept for $2. But we know that’s never gonna happen so I’ll just have to see how much stuff I can fit inside this toy car and see how far I get . . . probably not very far.

Paint’s a Little Rough

Just looking at the car the paint looks fine; there’s nothing to keep this from being an excellent display piece on any Captain America or toy car shelf. But if you click on the various photos here you’ll see that when you study the paint closely some of the edges are a bit fuzzier than we want to see; the silver paint on the headlights is the worst offending patch of blurred paint lines but it’s really only noticeable in these photos and when you hold the toy right up to your eye.

Is it Fun?

That’s really gonna depend on personal preferences. I’d say anyone who is a serious Captain America collector will want at least a few of these Maisto Captain America die-cast vehicles in their collection, while anyone who collects both Captain America and toy cars may want to go insane and buy all 12 of the different designs that have been released. I’m gonna come somewhere in the middle of the extremes and probably grab one or two more of the cooler-looking cars in the series; but at $2/each even collecting all 12 cars isn’t a terrible financial hardship.

Closing Thoughts

Though more expensive than the basic Hot Wheels toy cars, this Captain America 2002 Cadillac Concept is nicely priced for it’s weight and size and really looks like a bargain when you compare it to the Hot Wheels Masters of the Universe series (review here) that’s also in stores right now. I just wish I had a better way to display all of the toy cars in my collection; I’ve got some in the living room but the shelves aren’t really suited to such small toys.

Philip Reed should do something insane like try to find the Marvel toy cars from the seventies.
