Review – Custom Skeletor by Monsterforge

Standing 2.5-inches tall, this little custom Skeletor — created by Monsterforge (blog) — blends the designer toy scene with Mattel’s Masters of the Universe in a fun one-shot sculpt that I’m happy to have in my collection. Yes, this is the only one of its kind and I’ve got it . . . which means this review exists solely to show you what can be done when a talented toy artist sets his mind to devising his own version of a classic character.

Moh-Toos

A one-off custom created separately of the original Moh-Toos run (see this post at Monsterforge’s blog), this cute little Skeletor simply makes me wish Monsterforge had cast every design and offered them as resin figures. But, instead, every single one was crafted in clay so it would take some real hardcore trading and dealing to get more than one of these toys . . . that’s my not so subtle way of saying if you have one of these then we need to talk.

A Work of Art

The Skeletor sculpt is adorable, a twisted and distorted version of the classic Skeletor — with staff! — that’s reduced down to this adorable design. And he’s loaded with fine details including craggy, nasty teeth on his skull-headed face that makes me wonder just how much time was spent sculpting this guy.

We Need a Skeletor Art Show

I continue to say that what we, as toy fans, really need is an art show dedicated to Skeletor. A place where artists can create custom toys, display sketches and drawings, and wow us with amazing paintings of Skeletor. I would happily run such an event, but the soonest spot in my schedule would be next year so I instead beg the web to find a way to make this happen without me. I don’t exactly have the time to organize and run such a show — and Austin doesn’t really have any great places for a Skeletor show — but I want to see it happen. Just make damned sure there’s a hardcover book collecting everything that was on display so those of us unable to attend can have a collection of the work.

Closing Thoughts

A fantastic custom toy and one that I’m happy to be able to share with all of you. Monsterforge should keep creating these little clay toys — hey, where’s the Transformers toys? — and I should get a lot better about staying on top of his releases. The Skeletor looks great with my other Masters of the Universe toys and pulling him out and photographing him reminds me I still have another custom Skeletor I should share with all of you . . .

  1. That;s a very cool and unique piece. I love the idea of a Skeletor art show of somekind. That would be a very unique and worthwhile experience!

  2. I’m not very up to date on the different MOTU lines – which line is the action figure from in the next to the last picture?
