Review – FOEZ Skekiltor, the Mace of Hades
Halfbad Toyz (website, Twitter) and oOMoSOo (blog, Flickr, Etsy) launched this Skekiltor resin toy last month and earlier this week, when my order of blanks arrived, this painted version of the toy reached me. So to start the review we need to make it very clear that I’m a fan of oOMoSOo’s resin toys and the toy shown here was a gift.
Obviously, all of this affects the review that you’re about to read.
A Stunning Price for a Spectacular Sculpt
Yes, Skekiltor is a resin toy, but the prices listed at the Halfbad Toyz store are shockingly low for a 4.5-inch tall resin toy. $15 for a single color or $18 for a glow-in-the-dark version of the toy is pretty damned low and I wouldn’t be surprised if the price went up at some point in the near future. The photos posted at the store give you an idea of the sculpt, but the painted pics in this review should make it clear that oOMoSOo put everything he had into making this one impressive-looking toy.
A scary mace, a massive hand, and a skull/jack o’ lantern-like head all come together to make this an even better sculpt that oOMoSOo gave us with his Snot Beast resin toys (see my “Trap Jaw” Snot Beast review for links to all of the Snot Beast reviews I’ve posted so far). And that’s saying a lot because even today I love the look of the Snot Beasts and I do not at all regret naming the toy the best resin toy of 2010 (awards post here).
The pics below give you a closer look at the toy; please click on each shot and take a look at the sculpt of the mace and that over-sized hand. The skull belt buckle is a nice touch, and I really love how oOMoSOo gave the toy a pitted and pocked surface that makes its skin look like something withered and near-dead. Absolutely fantastic work on the sculpt.
Painted Editions
The single-color versions are damned cheap, but if you’re willing to dump a bit more cash into your own Skekiltor you can grab a fully-painted version of the toy at the Halfbad Toyz store for $45. And if the special version they painted up for me is any indication of the quality then $45 is an excellent price for the fully-painted toy.
This is obviously a Skeletor-themed design to go with my Skeletor-colored Snot Beast (review here) and I’m surprised and honored that the guys at Halfbad pay enough attention to my ramblings that they caught my wish for a Skeletor-colored version of the toy. That makes it tough to say anything but great things about the toy’s paintjob, but I hope that the photos I’ve posted here reinforce my opinion that this is a great resin toy.
Closing Thoughts
The day that Halfbad Toyz (website, Twitter) and oOMoSOo (blog, Flickr, Etsy) decided to work together needs to be written down as one of the great days of 2011, because if this Skekiltor resin toy is any indication of what they’re going to do together then designer toy and monster fans the world over need to be thankful for this partnership.
I’ll fully admit that I’m being a bit too gushing in this review, but the toy looks great and I was given one that was custom painted just for me . . . so can you blame me for being happy with the toy?
This Skekiltor is gonna look great in my collection of resin toys, and I’ve already started painting one of the blank versions so that I can have multiples of these in the display case right there with the Snot Beast. Thanks, guys, for this fantastic toy and good luck with the next design.
Philip Reed needs to dig out his Avalman resin toy design and get cracking on it. The Avalman isn’t anywhere near as cool as the Skekiltor, but the two need to get onto the same shelf so that they can fight with each other every night while Philip sleeps.
Thanks a bunch for the review Phil! Glad you liked the little bugger, hopefully sooner than later feet head will be done and sent off to them for casting now that I’m back to working on it.
Thanks for a great review Phil! Glad you like the Skekiltor. Thanks!
