Review – Franken Berry Blox

Funko’s Blox series of vinyl toys (Amazon.com search*) continues to attract my attention, and it’s getting so bad that I’ve now broken down and bought the standard edition of the exact same Franken Berry Blox that I got at San Diego Comic Con last year (review here). What makes this one different? Well, the con exclusive version uses metallic paint while this one has just flat colors. And that’s really the only difference between the two.

And I’m happy to have both.

So Very Much Fun

The sculpt continues to be as impressive as ever, and I am still a bit stunned that Funko is taking the route of custom-sculpting each figure in the Blox series. If someone had asked me to design a series of flattish designer toys I probably would have gone for a platform approach, but Funko went all out and this Franken Berry Blox* toy, while clearly being part of the Blox line, is a unique sculpt and not just one basic sculpt with dozens of paint variations. The Batman Blox (review here) and Franken Berry Blox may be from the same series, but the sculpts are completely different.

What makes me so impressed that the sculpts are different? Hey, it costs money to create tooling for toys — and don’t forget the sculpting — and the fact that Funko sunk that money into unique sculpts and tooling shows that they really believe in the Blox series. And, I have to admit, that I’m becoming more and more of a believer as I place more of these flatish vinyl toys on my shelves. To me that says Funko is doing an excellent job with the line.

More Franken Berry?

After reviewing the Franken Berry Hot Wheels Custom ’77 Dodge Van (review here) and Franken Berry Wacky Wobbler Car (review here) over the last few days I thought it would be fun to toss another Franken Berry toy onto the site. Why? Because it humors me to see all of those Franken Berry images on the side of the page. Yes, I am easily amused. I just hope that you’re also as easily amused as I am . . . you may not have seen the last of this pink monster.

Closing Thoughts

Between the photos in this review and the photos in the SDCC metallic Franken Berry Blox (review here) you should have a pretty good idea of what to expect from the Franken Berry Blox* toy. Basically, you can expect a cute toy with flawed paint. I think that’s as simple as I can put it.

Philip Reed promises that he’ll review something other than Franken Berry . . . but maybe not until we see another Franken Berry toy or two.
