Review – Marvel MEGA Bloks Wolverine and Whiplash

Line: Marvel * Manufacturer: Mega * Year: 2011

As I mentioned a few days ago (mentioned here) I grabbed two bags of the new Marvel MEGA Bloks* toys. And as you can see by these photos I did not get an Iron Man but instead found myself with Wolverine and Whiplash.

Basically What We’ve Seen Before

The biggest difference between this wave and the first seems to be variety. Where wave one was packed with Iron Man armors with a few others thrown in for fun this wave has Red Skull, Thor, Captain America, an Iron Man 2 drone, and is just generally more diverse in the character selection. But in the end the articulation and overall look is identical to the first wave, which makes perfect sense since these are the MEGA Blok equivalent of LEGO mini-figs.

Not Good and Not Bad

The character sculpting and paint is roughly of the same level we saw on the first wave, which means that these are just okay toys. I’ve had the first wave MEGA Bloks figures around long enough to know that there’s nothing really special when it comes to these toys; what you see is exactly what you get. And that’s neither good nor bad, it’s just that for $2.50 you get a small collectible that might look good on your shelves . . . or it might get lost in a drawer.

That’s Enough for Me

Sorry, MEGA Bloks, but I’ve bought enough of these Marvel MEGA Bloks* blind-bagged toys to know what they are and to know that I’ve got plenty of them for my shelves. For reasons I can’t explain the Halo blind-bags still interest me, but the Marvel bags no longer hold any wonder for me.

Philip Reed feels he is being a little unfair to the MEGA Bloks toys by dismissing them, but the toys just don’t hold up and after months with wave one this new wave did nothing to spark excitement.

  1. I almost picked up one of these last night, then I decided $2.50 was just a little too much, especially if I ended up with movie thor or something that I really just didn’t want. I’d love to get the Red Skull though.

  2. Oh, but the Halo ones do indeed look cool. I don’t think there was a stinker anywhere in there.

  3. I picked up three packs at TRU because they had a buy 2 get one free deal with Megabloks – and got 3 drones. All 3 of the same figure was pretty disheartening. I guess I’ll throw them in with all the Halo figures I bought thinking that I would make up some tabletop skirmish game rules for them… some day.
