Review – Marvel Universe Compound Hulk

Line: Marvel * Manufacturer: Hasbro * Year: 2011 * Ages: 4+

At NYCC this year Hasbro took their Marvel Universe Red Hulk action figure (review here) and gave it a different paint app and had geeks lining up to grab the Compound Hulk. I never had a chance to hit the Hasbro store at NYCC, but Matt Doughty (Onell Design) knew that I wanted this toy and made everything work out so that I left the con with a Compound Hulk.

And here he is!

Packaging

One thing Hasbro has been good about with their various Marvel Universe exclusives is the packaging. Above you can see the outer box that Compound Hulk comes in while below you can see the standard Marvel Universe packaging that’s inside the box. Attractive and perfect for those MIB/MOC collectors. But that’s not me so let’s get this monster action figure opened up and start playing with him.

Hulk Smash . . . Together

This had to have been a really simple action figure for Hasbro to create but I’m still glad that I’ve got one because he looks great with the other Marvel Universe Hulk action figures that are in my collection. Physically he’s identical to the Red Hulk, but the paint apps are far superior to what we got on the Red Hulk, original Green Hulk (review here), or the Grey Hulk (review here).

Below you can see various shots of those three action figures together and I think that each shot clearly proves that the newer Marvel Universe action figures are getting far more detailed and complex paint apps than those earlier releases did. A lot of it’s just dark washes to bring out the highlights, but if you look at the Compound Hulk’s face and compare it to the Red Hulk and Green Hulk faces you can see the overall appearance is a lot nicer these days. Impressive, and playing with this guy has me thinking it is far past time that I open the Classic Avengers Pack* and let that Hulk join his brothers.

Closing Thoughts

There’s not a lot that I can say about the Compound Hulk that I haven’t already said before about this sculpt. This is a great paint application on a figure we have seen before and I have to say that the Marvel Universe Compound Hulk* isn’t a necessary figure . . . unless you’re after every single Marvel Universe Hulk that Hasbro has created.

Philip Reed is now trying to decide if he jumps right into the Classic Avengers Pack or if he takes a nap. Tough decision!

  1. I really like this guy for some reason.
I am slightly disappointed his head isn’t a new sculpt. But his colors are just gorgeous.

  2. @chopa – I think the reason I like this one is that it’s so very weird. And now I am wanting a Blue Hulk even more than I did before. Hasbro, call me and we’ll put together a clear blue Hulk as a battlegrip.com exclusive!
