Review – Masters of the Universe Candy Cups

Line: Masters of the Universe * Year: 1983

After the excitement of the Centurions Pencil Top Erasers (review here) I just couldn’t resist bringing another wacky, useless piece of junk from the eighties onto battlegrip.com. And what could be more useless than paper cups that, if things had gone right almost thirty years ago, would have been used at a party?

Packaging

The Masters of the Universe Candy Cups — six identical cups in the pack — come packaged in the basic header card/bag concept that has become so popular today with the high-end, expensive Japanese vinyl toys that continue to abuse my mind. A bit worn from age, the header card is in pretty good shape for being little more than trash. As you can see in the photo, the header gives us a drawing of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe logo big enough to be seen from across the aisle when shopping. Completely disposable . . . but I’m gonna display my header card with my toys.

Six Identical Cups

Man, talk about robbing us poor kids. They couldn’t even bother to include different characters on the cups? Seriously, getting an army of Beast Man cups had to have been only to save money . . . either that, or to cut back on fights at parties when every kid wants the He-Man or Skeletor cup. The back card, showing Beast Man, stands about 2-inches tall while the front card is about 2-inches tall. It’s all pretty simple.

He-Man.Org Doesn’t Have these Candy Cups?

That’s strange. They have a candy mold (I want that!) and a page of party favors and invitations, but I’m not finding these candy cups anywhere on the site. Either my search-fu blows, or I’ve got something so worthless here that he-man.org doesn’t think it’s worth displaying. Awesome, I have true garbage!

Closing Thoughts

I’m betting you’re seriously jealous that I have Masters of the Universe Candy Cups and you don’t. Either that, or you’re trying to find the phone number to have men in white coats sent over to pick me up. Either way, these are complete trash but they’re funny enough — and the art is cool enough — that the header card and one of the cups must be displayed with my toys. After all, what fun is a toy display that doesn’t have odd junk tossed into the mix?

Philip Reed should track down more junk like this for his collection and review. It’s kinda fun to look at the weird, useless trash that was created back in the eighties.

  1. Ahaha, those are awesome, and Skeletor makes a very good salesman! I can’t believe how they cheaped out and made them all Beast-Man, but maybe that would save on the whole bickering “I want He-Man!” “No, I do!!” at the party. So who knows, it might have been for the best!

  2. Very cool. It would have been great to get a ton of that stuff in the mid 1980’s when it was going out of fashion. You know they made a ton of it.
