Review – Metal Gear Solid Kubrick Iroquois Pliskin

Lego Minifigs. Kreons. Minimates. Can you believe how many little action figures all look to be from the same basic family tree? Well, the Kubricks toys from Medicom are part of that same family of little toys, and this Metal Gear Solid Kubrick blind box toy (Amazon.com search*) just had to be mine when I found it in Hong Kong for less than $3 US. That was a fantastic price, but now that I’ve opened the toy I’m glad I didn’t pay full retail.

We’ve Seen Kubrick Toys Before

I’ve reviewed Kubrick toys in the past — Kubrick Violator review here, Kubrick Spawn review here — and they’ve been okay. Not too spectacular or amazing, but not bad toys. I’ve intentionally avoided the Star Wars Kubricks because I just know those would doom me; if you’re at all interested in Kubricks I suggest reading my earlier reviews for a better idea of what these toys are like.

Sculpt and Paint

Just fine. Like Minimates and Kreons the Kubrick series is made of basic buck figures with special accessories and paint/tampo designs, and that sameness can lend itself to some “haven’t I seen this before?” feelings as you play with the toys. But at 2.5-inches tall these are a bit meatier than those other toys, and to be fair to Medicom they really do a nice job with the figure design and the paint and tampowork. The hair and battle harness are especially nice touches.

Articulation

There’s a little. Swivel neck and waist joints and the shoulders and hips are restricted ball-joints that have some side-to-side move and decent forward-to-back movement. A talented customizer could probably carve a little plastic off of the limbs to give the arms and legs more outward movement, but these types of toys really aren’t about the articulation.

Closing Thoughts

The Metal Gear Solid Kubrick blind box toys (Amazon.com search*) strike me as simply okay. I have a second box not yet opened, but I’m kinda glad that I didn’t go insane and buy eight or nine boxes when I found them on clearance in Hong Kong.

I’ll probably pick up the occasional Kubrick here and there, but nothing about these toys makes me want to rush out and start collecting them all.
