Review – Outer Space Men Colossus Rex
This latest Outer Space Men action figure review shows off what may be the most remarkable new figure in the series. Colossus Rex (Four Horsemen we store) looks to be one of the most fully painted, detailed, and amazing Outer Space Men action figures we’ve seen yet . . . and the result is astounding!
A Shimmering Green
The first thing that stands out about Colossus Rex (Four Horsemen we store is the near-metallic sheen of the action figure’s “skin.” My first thought was that a pearlized plastic was used in the toy’s construction, but when swapping the toy’s hands — the action figure has two sets of one, one for grasping and one for clawing — I noticed that the plastic is white.
This truly is one of the most painted Glyos System toys I’ve ever seen!
I think that if you look through the pics in this review — remember, click on any of the pics in reviews at battlegrip.com for a much closer look — you will see why I am so impressed with the paint apps on Colossus Rex (Four Horsemen we store). Lots of little details, and the translucent purple plastic accessories really help give the toy some fun visual interest even beyond the excellent paintwork.
Articulation
As with the other releases in the Outer Space Men series, Colossus Rex (Four Horsemen we store) uses the Glyos System joints for articulation . . . which also means the toy is customizable, since every separate part can be swapped with other Glyos-compatible toy parts.
The Glyos System joints work exactly as expected — simple swivels and a lot of interchangeability — and as the 16bit.com review tells us, a total of 14 points of articulation work together quite well and allow you to get the toy into several poses. But at the end of the day you’re either a Glyos joint fan or not, so no about of words will sway you. I like them, as do many others, and if you’ve never given a Glyos toy a chance then you really should.
Sculpting
As with all of the work of the Four Horsemen, Colossus Rex (Four Horsemen we store) features one of the best sculpts in modern action figures. Those scales are gorgeous, the character design fabulous, and I’ll cheat a bit by quoting the Colossus Rex review at The Fwoosh where VeeBee writes:
Not only is Colossus Rex my favorite character in terms of design, but I think he also has some of the absolute best sculpting in the line. All of his scales are individually sculpted and all of them have unique texture patterns to them. Sure, that is REALLY hard to see with the naked eye, but just knowing they are there is pretty cool. Plus, the metallic green paint used to bring highlights to his skin really makes him stand out from the pack.
See? Even that paintwork gets a mention in VeeBee’s review. I’m serious when I say that Colossus Rex (Four Horsemen we store) pops as one of the cooler of the toys in what’s already a line of fun action figures. I would love to see even more Glyos System action figures get some limited releases with insanely-detailed paint apps. Why? Because this entire wave of Outer Space Men turned out way too neat to ignore the possibilities for Onell Design figures to get some limited edition versions.
Closing Thoughts
Another great release in an unexpectedly fun toy series, the Four Horsemen’s Colossus Rex (Four Horsemen we store) towers over most of the other toys in the line, has a look that’s all his own, and deserves to make it onto any reviewers “best figures of 2014” list. The combination of masterful sculpt with detailed paintwork gives us something truly special, and standing the figure in the display case over the weekend made me stop and smile; he looks really good in a group of his companions.
But before taking my word for it I suggest looking at the other reviews out there — including this other 16bit.com review — for other opinions. I may be a bit biased since I like green, the Four Horsemen sent me this toy as a gift, and I entered into the situation already a Glyos fan.
But even if I am biased I can still say this is a fun toy. Grab one!
Man, I love this guy! Your review almost made me buy him until I saw the $26+s/h! Yikes! I can just admire him from afar!
@Matthew M – You should check a few of the scratch and dent sale pieces while they’re still up. Those clear versions of some of the figures look like candy!
Most of the OSM have been too retro or ridiculous (Terra Firma) for me but I might have to pick up Colossus Rex. He would look good in a Glyos display taking on an Armodoc.
@stack32 – There’s a hell of a lot of “tongue-in-cheek” going on when it comes to Terra Firma. Terra Curva may have been an even more fitting name for her.
Actually all the ones I’ve checked from this and the last Infinity releases have white plastic underneath…even the GITD Gamma-X is actually GITD paint, not plastic. Only the first waves had colored plastic on the Infinity editions. I first noticed the change on my Cyclops and Orbitron… mixed feelings on that, I’d have rather had them with a solid color base, but they look amazing all the same, so I can’t really complain.
That said, it becomes obvious another way the White Star releases were more cost effective for Four Horsemen. 🙂
@Microbry – I’d not even considered that all of the white toys were run at once and then these painted. That definitely would have saved some cash and been a very smart move.
The white surprised me. But the paint apps are so flawless that until I removed the hands I didn’t even know there was white plastic underneath.
