Review – Pop! Ad Icons Franken Berry

The Pop! Ad Icons Franken Berry toy (mentioned here) should be released very soon, but while we wait for the basic toy to hit shelves let’s take a look at the San Diego Comic Con exclusive version. Using metallic paint (like the Franken Berry Blox I reviewed last month), this little vinyl toy is kinda shiny and a whole lotta neat. Even if it does have problems.

Not Perfect Paint

For a con exclusive I actually expected a better quality paint app than Funko gave us on this toy. There are more rough spots than I like to see, some splotchy spots where the paint isn’t even, and generally a poorer quality of paint than I expect from a limited run toy. Maybe it’s just my lack of experience with Funko’s work — I don’t collect bobbleheads so I haven’t really bought their stuff before this year — but I think that the paint is the weakest bit of work on the toy.

Articulation

Coming in a close second on the weak-o-meter has to be the toy’s single point of articulation: the head swivels at the neck. That’s it! Those arms are forever outstretched, poor Franken Berry here unable to lower his arms to his sides and take a break.

The Sculpt is Fun

Even though he’s only 4-inches tall, Funko packed a lot of fun into Franken Berry’s design. Like all of the other of Funko’s POP! Vinyl figures* the sculpt itself is wonderful . . . but the sculpt doesn’t elevate the limited articulation and poor paint job enough for me to recommend that you drop everything and order your own limited Franken Berry toy.

Closing Thoughts

Another Franken Berry toy and still waiting on an incredible work that is the definitive Franken Berry toy. This small collectible is cute and looks nice on the shelf, but the bad paint apps and single-point of articulation make me think that if I had played with the toy before dropping cash I probably would have skipped this.

Philip Reed still thinks he should probably grab a Franken Berry bobblehead or two.
