Review – Pop! Vinyl Bobble-Head Captain America
Earlier this month I reviewed the new Mini Muggs Captain America (review here) and found it to be a cute toy with poor paint apps and a few problems. Well, now it’s time to look at another cute Captain America toy, this time one from Funko’s Pop! Vinyl series (Amazon.com search*). How is it? It’s okay.
Funko’s Sculpts Are Excellent
So far I’ve looked at a small number of Funko’s Pop Vinyl toys here at battlegrip.com. What’s the number? Well, here’s the list of reviews so far:
- Pop! Vinyl Michael Jackson (Smooth Criminal)
- Pop! Vinyl Mars Attacks
- Pop! Holidays Heat Miser and Snow Miser
- Pop! Ad Icons Franken Berry
So not exactly a lot of toys in the line, but enough that I’m comfortable saying that Funko sinks most of the work in their Pop! Vinyl line into the sculpts.
And this Captain America Bobble-Head* continues the Funko tradition of excellent sculpts. As you can see in the photos, this 3.75-inch tall bobble-head is smooth and clean, with a detailed costume that’s clearly the movie Captain America costume. The lack of any articulation at all (unless you count the springy head) continues to be a bit annoying, but the sculpts are just too cool for me to complain too much about the zero points of articulation.
Funko’s Paint Continues to Suck
Worn spots, rough edges, and generally sloppy work seems to mar each of Funko’s Pop! Vinyl series toys (Amazon.com search*). It has to kill the artists behind each figure when they see the final toy and I wish Funko would take action to dramatically improve the paintwork. Seriously, this line is already cute and fun, but if Funko could just improve the paint apps I think it would transform into a stellar line of toys that none of us could resist.
Closing Thoughts
After seeing the wall of Pop! Vinyl series toys (Amazon.com search*) at New York Toy Fair last month (post here) I keep staring at the line and thinking how great they look in a bunch. And even though I don’t really collect Captain America toys and statues the $10 price tag on this toy was low enough that I took a chance on it.
The end result is exactly like the other Pop! toys: an incredibly cute sculpt that’s damaged by bad paint. Buy this one only if you’re a Captain America collector . . . or if, like me, you’re a sucker for the cuteness of the design.
Philip Reed still wants to grab the Pop! Vinyl Iron Man.
These Pop! figures really are pretty neat. I’ve just got a few but they really compliment each other well.
