Review – Real X Head/Onell Design Pheyaos
Line: Glyos * Manufacturer: Onell Design and Real X Head * Year: 2010
I reviewed the Real X Head/Onell Design vinyl toy, Pheyaos, back in October (review here), but much like the Glyos Gobon toy I just couldn’t resist the opportunity to show you guys Pheyaos again. This is exactly the same sculpt that we’ve already seen, so what I’ve done this time around is take photos of the toy from different angles so that you can get a closer look at it.
Packaging
This Pheyaos released uses the exact same header card as the original (white) Pheyaos toy. So anyone who scored both versions of the toy, and keeps header cards, has an extra card to trade with a Glyos collector. After all, with so few Pheyaos toys in distribution right now I’m willing to bet that there’s at least one fan out there who didn’t get a Pheyaos and would still love to have one of these header cards in his collection.
More Colorful
The original Pheyaos release (review here) used white paint with black details, a red eye, and a red blast of paint from an airbrush on the chest. He looks great, but this version of the toy looks a lot more like the airbrushed Japanese vinyl toys that I often see posted at sites like toybot studios. And it’s not just the blasts of silver and purple paint from an airbrush on the chest and horns; no, this Pheyaos’ base color fades from Pheyden blue on one side into a green that appears to come right out of the Real X Head Chaos mini-figure that was used as the left side of the Pheyaos design.
Do Not Buy One of These!
Trust me, guys. You may be the most hardcore Glyos fan on the planet, but if you’re not already collecting Real X Head toys then you should close your eyes whenever a new colorway of this guy hits the Onell Design website. For a long time I managed to just look at the cool Japanese toys online, but the instant I owned Pheyaos I found myself seriously thinking about buying a few Real X Head mini-figures.
The Instant a New Pheyaos is Released You Should Grab One!
He may be small and expensive, but Pheyaos is a fantastic addition to any Glyos toy collection. Like the rare Custom Corps figures (review here), Pheyaos is one of those “feather” pieces of the Glyos series and he makes a great centerpiece for any Glyos display. I think two of these is enough for my collection, but if a red Pheyaos toy pops up online I’ll very likely try to grab one. The toy’s creepy and cute all at once, with that doll’s eye giving it an appearance so unlike anything else in my collection that it stands out.
Every Glyos fan should have at least one Pheyaos in his collection; the toy just looks great when he’s surrounded by an army of standard figures.
Closing Thoughts
I know this style of toy isn’t for everyone, but if you’re at all interested in hard-to-find toys then you can’t add anything that’s much rarer to your toy collection. With runs around 30 to 40 per colorway, every single Pheyaos toy is a rarity. And as a joint effort between Real X Head and Onell Design this guy has two camps of collectors trying to chase him down. So if you’re into toys as investments a Pheyaos is a good risk.
But you would need to keep him bagged to protect your investment. And that would just be wrong, since a bagged Pheyaos isn’t any fun to play with.
Philip Reed should set fire to his copy of “An Encyclopedia of Kaiju” right now before it’s too late. And he should go in for shock treatment to protect himself from the danger that is Japanese vinyl toys. Won’t someone save Philip from the lure of these cool toys?
Great review. I love when you say thinking of buying MINI figs lol. they are the cheap gateway my friend. I would deffinately like to have a few different color ways of this.
